An Historic Milestone as Rosenior Breaks Barriers

"Rosenior represents a top tactician who knows football back to front, which is what matters most.

"But, in my role as Chelsea's pioneering black footballer, it would be dishonest to claim this moment fails to move me."

Those are the sentiments of the former Chelsea winger, who made his groundbreaking first appearance for the Blues' first team off the bench in April 1982.

On Tuesday, Chelsea appointed RC Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior, 41, to be their new head coach following the exit of Enzo Maresca.

Strasbourg are within the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned ownership group that also controls the London club.

There have been just 12 black head coaches – not including individuals holding temporary caretaker roles – in England's top flight since it began thirty-four years ago.

"One thing that impresses me about Liam is that he grew up and played not far from here, he knows the local fans," added Canoville.

"When youngsters see a figure like Rosenior in charge of their club, a person who looks like them, who's from their ends, from a household that fights for equality… it is impactful and shows them that opportunities exist.

"So yes, it is a massive step for Chelsea, for London, for every young person with big dreams.

"However, currently? Let's back Liam, give him the necessary tools, and allow him to get on with the job."

What Exactly Does the Numbers Show?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit was appointed the Blues' manager back in the nineties thereby becoming the top flight's inaugural African heritage head coach.

Twelve years later, by 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the first English black boss in the top flight when he took over Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' boss Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the sole additional present top flight gaffer from a minority ethnic background.

The shortage of ethnic minority managers throughout English football is matched by a lack of diversity at executive level.

According to a Black Footballers Partnership 2023 study, forty-three percent of Premier League footballers come from black backgrounds.

However, research from the equality organization found only 3.2 percent of executive and leadership management teams at 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are from minority ethnic backgrounds.

Regarding senior coaching positions, based on data from 11 clubs, the percentage is 2%.

Across all coaching positions – including senior roles – from those same eleven clubs, the statistic is five percent.

"He has undoubtedly made history by virtue of him being announced as Chelsea head coach, and as an organization, we hope to witness more such appointments," said Kick It Out CEO Samuel Okafor.

"It is acknowledged that there exists loads of ability present within black and underrepresented communities... they desire a chance to show their capabilities. It is imperative to continue to striving to break those barriers down."

Additionally, the new appointee is set to become the fourth full-time English managers currently in the Premier League – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – a number that trails the continent's remaining big five divisions regarding national representation.

Sixteen of the 20 first division managers in Serie A are Italian, Eleven of the 20 in Spain, Twelve in the Bundesliga are German and 10 of the 18 in France.

Current Chelsea interim boss Calum McFarlane commented: "I'm sure all aspiring British coaches from an academy background will be, to some degree regardless of allegiance, rooting for Liam.

"It is really inspirational to up-and-coming British coaches in the system to see someone land that job with that profile and everyone hopes he does really well."

'Let's not forget – his appointment is based on talent'

His father, Leroy, Rosenior Sr., had a career with the likes of West London clubs, the Hammers and Queens Park Rangers, and his coaching stint culminating in a brief spell in charge of the third-tier club Brentford FC back in 2006.

Two years ago, he was awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the 2019 New Year Honours for his services to tackling inequality within the sport and beyond.

When Rosenior Jr retired from playing he followed a path in management. He started writing a column for a national newspaper, and in one piece he acknowledged the under-representation of black coaches. He highlighted that race does not influence coaching skill and said opportunities should be given on merit.

He also made a point he has often stated: how significant under-representation leads to a failure to understand of players from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

In a podcast with The Athletic FC, he explained how his star striker, Emmanuel Emegha, was labelled "hard to manage" or "passionate", but said he could relate to the Netherlands player with Nigerian parentage. The striker is expected to follow him in moving from France to Chelsea in July.

In subsequent newspaper articles, Rosenior also admitted he was "embarrassed" upon hearing a coach make a homophobic slur. He pledged support for the Premier League's Rainbow Laces campaign and wrote a public message to Donald Trump during his first US presidency, condemning his "blatant" prejudice.

He has subsequently made his name as a manager – initially with Hull City, then Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney recently stating he was "as good a coach as I've ever worked with" following their time together with Derby.

The manager bid goodbye at Strasbourg earlier this week before signing a long-term contract at Chelsea.

The Blues boasted the top flight's pioneering black manager with Gullit and the first black captain named Paul Elliott.
