The National Thunder skipper Carlos Akapo and fellow squad member Josete Miranda have each been banned for four matches for abusing the match official following their narrow loss by their opponents at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The ruling was made by a disciplinary panel after it examined the official's match report from the tournament encounter on the weekend, a loss that confirmed the team's exit from the competition.
The official reported that the two players "continually uttered insulting and offensive comments" towards him and his linesmen after the full-time whistle.
"These remarks were made in a context of intense anger stemming from the defeat, but nonetheless represent a serious violation of the principles of respect and conduct as well as the disciplinary regulations," noted the referee.
A portion of the individual suspensions for the two players have been deferred for a period of one year.
Tournament Consequences
Both players will now miss their team's last group match against their next opponents on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the country's governing body has been fined a sum of ten thousand dollars after its coaching team and players engaged in "persistent and aggressive complaints" against calls by the officials.
The official documentation indicated there was "a steady decline in conduct on the touchline" following an unfortunate deflection by defender Saul Coco in the second half.
Further Governing Body Action
Elsewhere, the continental body have additionally fined Burkina Faso captain Bertrand Traore the sum of ten thousand dollars for "offensive remarks" made in a post-match interview following his side's 1-0 loss to Angola.
