Far-Right Ex- Legislator José Antonio Kast Chosen as Chile Incoming Leader.
After a definitive runoff election, ultra-conservative politician José Antonio Kast has clinched the top job in Chile.
A Clear-Cut Win
With more than 99% of ballots counted, Kast secured 58.17% of the vote, defeating leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.
This represents Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having previously been beaten by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.
Agenda Centered On Law and Order and Immigration
Known for his strong Catholic views and regard for the rule of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was primarily focused on promises to tackle growing insecurity and drastically reduce migration.
He repeatedly pointed to immigrants, particularly the approximately 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for security issues. Throughout the election cycle, he issued an ultimatum for them to exit before the March 11 handover or face expulsion.
His proposals included Trump-inspired measures such as building detention centers, high walls, perimeter fencing, and increasing the army presence on the northernmost frontier.
Amid a Broader Trend
Numerous analysts see Kast's victory as fitting into a broader right-wing trend in the region, similar to recent political wins in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Nevertheless, other analysts also frame it as a part of the regular swing of power between left and right-wing governments since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.
Ruling Lacking a Strong Mandate
In spite of his clear popular vote win, Kast is not expected to have an overall majority in Congress, not in the Chamber of Deputies nor the Senate, even if all rightwing parties are grouped together.
This legislative landscape might complicate his plans, including a pledge to cut public spending by $6 billion within a year and a half—a plan for which he has not offered a clear explanation.
"We have many aspects about how a Kast presidency will be that remain unclear because he has not explained his methods for achieve them," noted a political science expert.
The analyst continued, "On economic policy, it is almost certain we will see adjustment measures typical of the right-wing. But the area with far less doubt is on public safety, because that has been his workhorse across the race."
