The US central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of positions added to the market in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in early October, it halted its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
