The UK's Fabio Wardley is set to be promoted to WBO heavyweight champion after Usyk opted to give up his title

This development comes after the champion told boxing authorities he would avoid a required championship defense against Wardley

WBO Statement

The boxing organization confirmed that Usyk had "elected to relinquish his championship following careful thought"

Usyk still holds the three major championship belts, having beaten his British opponent at the national stadium in July to become a double undisputed champion

He originally secured the all-belt title holder in May 2024 by beating Tyson Fury, before giving up the IBF title five weeks later and choosing to avoid the obligatory contender

Championship History

Usyk secured the world title in two years ago by defeating Anthony Joshua and went on to protect his title repeatedly

In July, the WBO had ordered negotiations for a mandatory defence against temporary title holder Parker, only for a Usyk's physical issue to cause the delay of the contest

Wardley's Rise

But Wardley, captured the temporary championship from Parker with a major surprise in the 11th round at the famous London arena recently and was ordered to fight the champion before the month's conclusion

The WBO is yet to officially confirm the British fighter's elevation but his manager Warren believes it is a formality
