The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had allowed ten goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.
A Season Coming Unstitched?
Was Lazio's season unraveling, or had there never been a thread holding it together from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach in the summer transfer window, before he admitted that the club had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were facing for accounting issues. Reports that he might quit were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.
Lazio became as messy in their performances as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their first five games, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, it has been hard to determine if they're getting better or self-destructing.
Matteo's Unforeseen Return
One individual remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio this year. He completed last season on loan at Parma and, early this summer, his owning club were attempting to remain there temporarily. The transfer ban forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to thin their squad with no new signings.
He signed originally during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those from the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom but then not selecting him."
Finding His True Position
It's possible the coach was persistently working to work out the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as a wide forward upon signing, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings while playing for Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
