Just prior to the announcement, a nervous worry flashed through the golfer's mind. He admitted he was concerned, "Not a racing champion this time."

"This has been a tremendous night for golf," McIlroy declared. "Our game was celebrated in such a big way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a big night for golf, and hopefully we can capitalize on that."

In this instance, however, there was no late twist. The result was decisive, allowing a delighted McIlroy to savor a memorable evening for both himself and the European Ryder Cup winners, who were crowned the year's best team.

A Whirlwind Schedule

Instead of opting to stay for the aftershow party, McIlroy was already thinking about his upcoming event. Having just played in a tournament in Florida and flown to the UK, he was returning immediately to Florida.

"It's been a whirlwind 24 hours," he said. "I'm looking forward to a little bit of rest over Christmas."

Hunger for More

That said, McIlroy made clear he has no plans to become complacent, despite achieving the set of all four majors earlier in the year. "My belief is I've got a several strong seasons in me," he claimed.

"More majors, order of merit titles, international events, that's the target. But provided that you feel like you can keep progressing and have the hunger, that's the most important thing."

Squad Celebration

At the same time, Ryder Cup partner Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to accept the team award, also lauded golf's stellar night and his pal's individual success.

"Those are the memories that will remain with us for all time so to get the people's vote for that is amazing," he commented. "Witnessing it Rory receive that award, I think he is so worthy so much."

When reminded that McIlroy was only the third player from golf to win the award in its 71-year history, Fleetwood chuckled before adding, "Golfers aren't top of the list are we!"

Next Targets

His goal is to secure his initial major championship next year but he understands McIlroy still craves more success. "As long as you want to be the ultimate competitor, and you're still motivated, you'll find things to enhance," the 34-year-old said.

Football Loyalty

As he was leaving, an additional topic came up. Being a massive Manchester United fan, he has been requested to display his trophies at Old Trafford before. So could he be persuaded to do it again after his recent triumphs?

"As long as they halt the flow of multiple scores in Manchester," he answered with a grin. "They're getting better. There's a hint of optimism around."

On the back of a remarkable year, it's no wonder that Rory McIlroy is focusing on the bright side.
