A seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has been granted a wild-card entry for the Australian Open, commencing on the 18th of January in Melbourne.
Historic Comeback to Melbourne Park
Tournament officials announced on Friday that the 45-year-old legend will make a return at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the early stage before exiting in the quarter-finals to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.
Preparing for the Australian Summer
The tennis star had previously revealed in November her plans to play in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a special entry, a fortnight prior to the Australian Open. The Australian Open added that Williams is scheduled to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a week later, immediately prior to the start of play at Melbourne Park.
Her most recent visit in the city was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the women’s singles on two separate instances, losing to Serena in the finals of 2003 and 2017.
"I am thrilled to return in Australia and eagerly anticipating playing during the Australian summer," Williams said. "I’ve had so many incredible memories there, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to return to a place that has meant so much to my career."
