Fresh analysis reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying such drugs need to be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Experts propose the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Users who have stopped the medication report a intense return of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle management.
