What We Know Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Shooting

A minimum of 16 individuals perished and more than 40 sustained injuries when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, authorities have stated the number of fatalities stands at 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were transported to medical facilities.

The deceased are still awaiting officially identified, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the victims who have been identified so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She described the events before the attack, saying they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, a senior official declared that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with five in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
